2011-2012 Media Awards and Legislative Reception

March 8, 2012

Legislative Office Building in Hartford, CT.

The Mental Illness Media Awards competition is sponsored by the Connecticut Psychiatric Society (CPS), the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-CT), and the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS).  This award is to honor journalists who put the spotlight on mental illness and mental health, promoting greater potential for treatment, rehabilitation and recovery.

The stigma against the mentally ill is real.  Their illnesses are real and they deserve to have their treatment covered by health plans.  In most cases with treatment, they carry on or return to productive lives, just as those with physical illnesses do.  Mental Illnesses affect nearly 25% of Americans.  Over 50 million adults suffer from mental disorders or substance abuse disorders on an annual basis.

The 23rd Annual Mental Illness Media Awards was a great success...congratulations to all our winners!
